Industry:
Hospitality and Tourism.

Services Provided:
This project involved expert project management and the coordination of signage and branding.

Client Background

Grootbos is celebrated globally for its commitment to conservation and sustainable luxury tourism. To maintain its reputation and appeal to an international audience, the reserve undertook a branding refresh. This project aimed to modernize the brand’s visual identity while ensuring consistency across guest-facing materials, product packaging, and on-site signage.

Project Goals

The primary goal was to leverage expert project management to oversee and coordinate the execution of a refreshed branding system across all touchpoints. This included ensuring that printed collateral, signage, and packaging for bespoke products such as Grootbos perfume, honey, wine, and gin accurately reflected the new brand identity. Effective project management was crucial to achieving a seamless integration of the refreshed branding, enhancing the guest experience, and reinforcing the reserve’s eco-luxury positioning.

Scope of Work

My role was centered on expert project management and production coordination, ensuring all deliverables met Grootbos’ exceptional standards. Collaborating closely with Atelier, led by Alex Hayn and Bruce Geils, as well as illustrator Anton Fernandes, I oversaw custom artwork integration into select materials. Through effective project management, I managed timelines, budgets, and supplier relationships, ensuring the successful production of various materials.

The deliverables included printed collateral such as brochures, guest guides, and stationery, alongside on-site signage like directional signs and property maps. I also coordinated the production of labels for Grootbos-branded products, including perfume, honey, wine, and gin. By adhering to the new branding guidelines and upholding the reserve’s premium quality, the project achieved seamless execution and elevated the brand’s visual identity.

Process and Execution

The branding refresh was driven by effective project management and collaboration with Atelier, senior leadership at Grootbos, and key stakeholders. While Atelier conceptualized and designed the refreshed identity, I applied meticulous project management to oversee its implementation across various formats, ensuring alignment with the brand’s vision and objectives.

For printed collateral, I worked closely with suppliers to guarantee exceptional quality and on-time delivery. Signage required strategic material selection to address the challenges of the coastal environment; brass and copper were replaced with more durable, cost-effective options that maintained the premium aesthetic. Additionally, I coordinated the production of labels for Grootbos-branded products, managing feedback loops between Atelier, stakeholders, and suppliers to deliver high-quality results and reinforce the brand’s identity.

Key Challenges

The coastal location of Grootbos posed significant challenges in material selection, particularly for on-site signage. The initial concept of using brass and copper, while visually striking, was unsuitable due to the corrosive effects of salt in the air and high production costs. Through strategic project management, I collaborated with suppliers to identify durable, cost-effective materials that aligned with the brand’s premium aesthetic.

Additionally, the coordination of custom label production for multiple Grootbos-branded products—each requiring unique specifications—required meticulous project management. This involved careful attention to detail, ensuring all labels adhered to branding guidelines, and proactive timeline management to meet tight deadlines while maintaining the highest quality standards.

Key Achievements

The branding refresh was delivered successfully, with all materials aligning seamlessly with the reserve’s luxury eco-tourism identity. The signage applications enhanced the visitor experience while blending harmoniously with the natural environment. The custom labels for Grootbos perfume, honey, wine, and gin have become iconic elements of the brand, further elevating its reputation for premium quality. The overall project was praised by the CEO and stakeholders for its precision, execution, and alignment with the reserve’s vision.

Outcome

The refreshed branding and its application across signage, collateral, and product packaging have significantly enhanced the guest experience at Grootbos. The consistency and quality of the materials have reinforced the reserve’s positioning as a leader in luxury eco-tourism. This ongoing role continues to involve managing updates and new deliverables, ensuring that Grootbos remains at the forefront of design and sustainability in the industry.

Feedback

We brought in Ismaeel Grant to coordinate the project and manage the production of all elements where our brand was visible.

This included all printed collateral, stationery, amenities, menus and signage. While we worked with a design company on all these branding elements, Ismaeel has also given valuable input into the design process. Ismaeel has been key in the success of this project having played an integral part in making sure that our high standards were met.
